MGS1970 Newsletter –
Christmas 2008
After
a lull, I have gathered more contact details in 2008 than for the last
few years. This is partly because some of the most ardent technophobes
have reluctantly embraced the internet (preparing to become silver
surfers ?). Perhaps more importantly, there was an article in the
Morecambe Visitor during the year which created many contacts.
I
have also had news from many and updated their information.
I
have had contacts from many MGS people from other years who would like
to be involved. Time has moved on since the MGS1970 website was created
and today things like Facebook (
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=5324373242 ) and
Friends Reunited (now completely free) may be more effective.
I’ve
added the current contact list below.
Originally this website used Netfirms who provided free hosting,
software and domain name. Netfirms don’t seem to offer this any more but
the site still exists ! I’ve worked quite hard to get the website well
positioned on Google, and this would be lost for a while if the domain
name was changed. I have a copy here on a hard disk, although the
content should be rewritten as it has hardly changed since 2002.
The
website has around 100 unique visitors per month. Not enough to threaten
Yahoo, but reasonable for our obscure search terms. Recent visitors
have been from Kanagawa, Japan; Bolton, United Kingdom; Edinburgh,
United Kingdom; Falkirk, United Kingdom; Great Malvern, Worcestershire,
United Kingdom; London, United Kingdom; Nassau, Bahamas; Ballwin,
Missouri, United States; Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, United
Kingdom; Languedoc-Roussillon, France ; Nanterre, Ile-de-France,
France ; Blackpool, United Kingdom; Huddersfield, Kirklees, United
Kingdom; Woodland, California, United States .
Most
of us are now 57 years old having left school 38 years ago. Even more
frightening is that it is 45 years since we started MGS in 1963.
Highlights of 1963 were a very cold winter, De Gaulle said Non to UK
common market entry, Please Please Me LP released by the Beatles, Dr
Beeching issued his report on the future of rail, growth of CND marches,
Dr No hit box offices, Pope John XX111 died,
Valentina Tereshkova
became the first woman in space, Kim Philby surfaced in Moscow, Great
Train Robbery, Martin
Luther King, Jr.
delivered his
I
Have A Dream
speech, the Ward & Keeler & Profumo story titillated UK, Alex
Douglas-Home became PM, Surtsey created by volcanic action, J F Kennedy
assassinated, 1st episode of Dr Who, Cyprus Emergency, death of Edith
Piaf.
I
would be grateful to know of new (and obsolete) email addresses. And if
you have any new contacts, please let me know !
Enjoy
your Yuletide, wherever you are
Peter
